Recipes Are For Sharing.

In light of the holidays, I wanted to share this delightful recipe for apple pie that I made for my family this week. It’s a traditional apple pie with a caramel sauce that makes the apples perfectly sweet and tart at the same time.

Grandma Opie’s Apple Pie
adapted by Stephanie Kelly, from Allrecipes.com

1 recipe pastry for a 9-inch double crust pie [I just used Pillsbury]
1/2 cup unsalted butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup water
8 Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored and sliced

Melt butter in a sauce pan. Stir in flour to form paste. Add white sugar, brown sugar and water; bring to a boil. Reduce temperature, and simmer 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, place the bottom crust in your pan. Fill with apples, mounded slightly. Cover with a lattice work of crust. Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust. Pour slowly so that it does not run off.

Bake 15 minutes at 425 degrees F. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes.

Just a couple suggestions for next time…

  • I didn’t do the lattice top, and it was a little too liquidy at the bottom of the pie. After thinking about it, I think the liquid would have evaporated if the lattice top was done instead of the full top.
  • Add some Apple Pie Spice to the apples before putting them into the pie pan and toss.
  • Vanilla Bean ice cream is the perfect complement to this pie - and your family will love you for it :)

Safe and happy holidays everyone!

Cheers,

S.
